An After Veterans Day post

We don't have a traditional church, in the sense that we rent a building to meet in. So when Veterans Day rolled around we were able to switch locations to a local American Legions in order to host a special Veterans Day service equipped with a complementary spaghetti dinner.

The point to the service was to express our gratitude to those that had served. It included a sermon and selection of patriotic music played by the worship team. (including my handsome husband) But there were other high points as well.

The bar area of the legion served IBC rootbeer, you know, the kind that comes in brown bottles. Which ended up being a favorite of the kids of all ages. I almost cracked up when I was flipping through the pictures on my camera and found this one of all these friends "chillin at the Legion knocking back a couple of rootbeers" after the service. Thanks to Sarah there were several surprise pictures for me to find.

There was also this picture of Aidan waiting patiently for his dad to bring his bottle back from the bar area.. waiting right under the "No kids allowed" sign.

Our Veterans Day service didn't draw the biggest crowd, mostly because it was a last minute effort on our part. It did however, bring one particular veteran who was able to share a little about his experience as a POW in WWII. The opportunity to honor him was a privilege for us, and I think we all enjoyed meeting him. The picture above is of my brother Jack who had driven straight from a weekend serving with the National Guard. He's sharing some of his pictures of his tour in Afghanistan last year. The gentleman sitting across from him is our new POW friend.
All in all it was a great Veterans Day Service and I really hope that we can do it again next year. And I'm grateful that we were able to think outside the box and take ourselves to an American Legion. Not all former soldiers are willing to come to a church. A "church" should be willing to come to them to offer thanks. After all, God meets us where we are in spite of our sin.. he doesn't wait for us to become perfect before loving us.

  2. We should definitely do it again. It was amazing getting to hear a POW slowly open up about his experiences.
